In view of the extreme temperatures experienced during the last summer season, it is proposed to initiate “Water Bell” programme as part of the Summer Action Plan, 2025, to prevent dehydration and heat-related ailments among students and to develop regular hydration habits.

 

Accordingly, the Standard Operating Procedure has been prepared for implementing the Water Bell Initiative in all schools with Half-Day schedules during the summer period. The objective is to ensure regular water intake by students and staff during school hours to prevent dehydration and promote general well-being.

 

Standard Operating Procedure: These guidelines are applicable to all schools functioning on half-day schedules as instructed by the School Education Department during the summer season.

Implementation Guidelines:

  1. Bell Sound: A distinct bell sound (musical or double ring) shall be used to differentiate the water bell from regular period bells. The duration of the bell should be 10 to 15 seconds.
  2. Participation: Teachers shall pause classroom activity during the bell and remind students to drink water. All students shall be permitted to carry water bottles to the They shall also be encouraged to refill their water bottles during short breaks if necessary.
  3. Water Supply and Infrastructure: Headmasters shall ensure the availability of clean and adequate drinking water in schools through RO systems, water coolers or earthen pots. They shall monitor the water availability and ensure timely refilling as required.
  4. Awareness Activities: Awareness posters with slogans such as “Drink Water Every Hour! Stay Cool, Stay Safe” shall be displayed in classrooms and near water Schools shall also conduct short awareness sessions or skits during morning assemblies in the first week of implementation.
  5. Monitoring and Reporting: Headmasters shall ensure that the Water Bells are rung as per the schedule and submit a brief weekly report to the Mandal Educational Officer concerned. The MEOs and Cluster Resource Persons shall conduct random inspections to verify compliance with the initiative.

Therefore, all the Regional Joint Directors of School Education and District Educational Officers in the State are hereby instructed to issue instructions to all Mandal Educational Officers and High School Head Masters of all Managements (ZP/Govt., Aided/Private) under their jurisdiction to implement the above Standard Operating Procedure with immediate effect and ensure that every student is reminded to hydrate at least three times during school hours.
